Doom Eternal takes the concept of visceral destruction to a whole new level

In times when the world is in quarantine due to the new coronavirus, the COVID-19, good entertainment options are welcome. Fortunately, Bethesda got the timing right (not on purpose) and released Doom Eternal, a visceral and spectacular video game, indispensable for anyone who loves action. l615k

The game was developed by Id Software and published by Bethesda. It is the sequence of Nintendo Switch is promised for sometime later in 2020.

In this review, we'll see what the new iteration of the acclaimed first-person shooter franchise has brought gamers.

Bigger and more frantic 635f45

Doom Eternal is the sequel to 2016's Doom. The game follows the same style as its predecessor, however id Software went further in the points that stood out in the previous title. The exacerbated violence dictates the pace of the game, which has practically all the elements aimed at the act of gutting demons. The rule is only one: don't stop until you finish them all.

The new game takes place mostly on a planet Earth taken over by demons, so scenarios such as destroyed cities and shopping centers and with hordes of enemies on the loose are common. It stands out from the previous game, which was mostly set in military installations on the planet Mars.

A construction on planet earth is still standing, but surrounded by destruction.
In Doom Eternal, the Earth has been taken over by demons.

History has never been the strong point of the Doom franchise, and Eternal is no different. O Doom slayer (or demon slayer) is on a wild hunt to save the planet from destruction, and he is the only thing feared by the creatures of hell. This is basically the premise of the entire game, but luckily there is plenty of room for the player to delve deeper into the universe presented in the game.

Plot details appear little by little through cinematics and, mainly, through textual explanations of items found along the way. There is a lot of material to check out, but reading is not mandatory. Anyone who just wants to tear apart demons, however, will miss out on an interesting knowledge of the game.

In the image, doom slayer points to an optional challenge portal.
Optional Doom Eternal challenges are scattered across the map and grant upgrade points.

At all times, the player is put into combat with demonic creatures. Now, each of them has several “breakable” parts that will be destroyed at the points where the Doom slayer hits them. The result is chunks of meat and viscera bouncing around the screen all the time.

As in the previous game, the protagonist is always running and weapons do not require reloading. When dealing enough damage to a demon, it will glow, indicating the possibility for the player to perform a Glorious Death (Glory Kill, as written in the game), which is an animation in which the enemy is destroyed and life points are released.

Player options grow in number in Doom Eternal. The protagonist now has a button to launch different types of grenades, another for the chainsaw (which grants ammo when used), another for a flamethrower (source of armor points when burning enemies), double jump and accelerated movement in different directions.

To do well in the game, the player needs to learn to use the available arsenal effectively, as the number of enemies on the screen is large (considerably greater than in the previous title) and the level of difficulty is very high. The result is the need to think strategically and, at the same time, not stick to any point on the map — the game becomes much more than simply shooting enemies.

Doom Eternal also flirts with the RPG. During the various phases of the game, the player's actions, if performed well, as well as items hidden in the scenario, grant points that can be used to improve weapons, the protagonist himself or how he manipulates the environment around him. There is a constant feeling that the player is evolving along with his character, getting stronger and better able to deal with the new creatures that continue to appear.

Scenes like this are common in Doom Eternal.

Between one level and another, the player is redirected to a fortress that is located in orbit around the planet Earth. In addition to serving as a lull, the stronghold contains plenty of content to explore as objectives are completed during each mission.

technical competence 1p1cn

for the development of Doom Eternal, id Software has updated the graphics engine they used in Doom, and this has allowed for a number of technical improvements. There isn't a graphical revolution compared to the previous title, but the detailing in the environment gives the Doom Eternal clear visual advantage.

The lighting effects are more realistic, and the scenarios, considerably wider than those of the predecessor, have multiple lighting sources. In addition, better quality textures and more detailed objects complement the environments.

In general, the game's locations are large and contain many simultaneous elements, including enemies. The design of each scenario (or level design, as commonly spoken in the video game industry) received a verticalization proposal, consistent with the new movement options for the controlled character. They are complex places, with demons scattered everywhere.

Doom Eternal has excellent cinematics.

With all these improvements, it is impressive that the game runs at a rate of 60 frames per second on all platforms, which becomes a visual delight with so many elements and light effects bouncing on the screen at all times.

As expected, on base consoles (disregard For PS4 e Xbox One X) there are possible drops in the performance of Doom Eternal, and some gagging is felt. Most of the time the decrease in performance does not affect the gameplay, but at times it is possible that one shot or another does not go as planned by the player.

Doom Eternal's scenarios are verticalized.

For those who have access, the most robust platforms (PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Google Stadia and PCs with enough power) run the game perfectly - which shows that PS4 and Xbox One have already reached their limits.

Two minor decisions by id Software are questionable and could be resolved in future updates. The first one is in relation to the language: Doom Eternal always starts with audio and subtitles in the console language, it is not possible to choose the configuration that the player wants. Voices in English and texts in Portuguese, so don't even think about it.

The second criticism is the lack of motion controls. The 2016 version of Doom for Nintendo Switch (which received the game in 2017) had a later update that included the ability to aim with the motion sensors present in the controller. Doom Eternal, released three years later, did not include such a possibility even though the PlayStation 4 controller ed the functionality.

At the end of the video you can see the bug described in the paragraph below.

It is also important to open a space to talk about bugs. while with us the Doom Eternal ran well, once the game had a bug that penalized the player. After finishing off a horde of enemies, a demon appeared and became trapped in the scenery (as seen in the video above). After defeating this remaining demon, the map didn't count the victory in that area (pictured below), so it didn't properly buff the player.

The image shows the map with a red portion, which indicates the presence of enemies, surrounded by green portions, ages already completed.
The map continued to mark the region as uncompleted.

Fortunately, it is possible to redo quests with the weapons, armor, and environment improvements you've already earned.

Ray Tracing 1c3hs

Since we're talking about the technical competence that Bethesda gave to Doom Eternal, emphasis should be given to the use of the newest technology Ray Tracing, a method developed to bring light effects to video games (and cinema) considerably closer to reality. It is worth noting that the Ray Tracing it is only available in the PC version of the game, on video cards that the technology.

The main thing to note when playing Doom Eternal to Ray Tracing activated, is that there are many more surfaces reflecting each light source, which, as we said above, are in large numbers in the game's scenarios. Given the frenzy of the game, with the glow of gunfire and enemies that blink non-stop, the result is a work that is already beautiful and is even more pleasing to the eye.

Doom Eternal at 4K, 60 frames per second and with the Ray Tracing activated is one of the best visual experiences the video game industry is able to offer today.

standout soundtrack 42v6w

The Doom franchise games have always had soundtracks that stood out. Doom Eternal is no exception.

The soundtrack follows the series' heavy tones, being more like 2016's Doom. It has the right energy for a game as frenetic as Doom Eternal, however, the impression is that, at times, it assumes a lower volume than it should.

The launch trailer gives an idea of the Doom Eternal soundtrack.

Either way, the player will feel constantly stimulated to slay demons under the weight of musical metal, which abuses bass instruments and strong bass and guitar distortions.

Asymmetric multiplayer 30zh

In addition to an excellent campaign that can easily reach 20 hours of gameplay, Doom Eternal has a refreshed multiplayer mode. While in Doom the multiplayer mode was a generic deathmatch, now there is a varied option that entertains for hours, great for those who want to have fun in an uncompromising way.

The multiplayer mode, played only over the internet, assumes what is called asymmetrical gameplay, in which each player has a different style of gameplay. Designed for up to three people, one controls the protagonist of the campaign mode, the Doom Slayer, while the other two players each control one of five of the great demons present in the game. The Doom Slayer must kill both demons, and vice versa.

Description of the multiplayer mode by Bethesda itself (audio in English).

The mode is quite fun and has simple rules. Despite this, mastering all the skills and possibilities of the online mode takes time and effort, which is a positive point.

Doom Eternal is a shooting game that goes straight to the point. No frills, the game puts the player in the obligation to go on top of enemies and disembowel them in a variety of ways. Despite the heavy theme, it's visually amazing and terribly satisfying in all the gore presented.

This is, undoubtedly, an essential game for anyone who likes shooting games and with great graphic appeal to violence. Now it remains to wait for the version of Doom Eternal for Nintendo Switch.

A room with the floor completely soaked in blood.
Some blood had been spilled.

And if this was the Doom that took away milk stone blood of the current generation, why not look forward to what will come in 9th generation video games?

The game can be found from R$199, and is available for PC, PlayStation 4 e Xbox One.
