Showmetech was invited by Diamond Films last Friday (5) to check out Civil War in theaters; The film arrives on April 18th throughout Brazil.

That A24 it went from being an independent production company, as every good cinephile knows. The quality of the films produced by the studio is irrefutable. And for now, April, the A24 brings Civil War (Civil War), film most expensive in the studio — costing US$50 million — and with the biggest debut of the producer in cinemas — ing in its first weekend in the USA between 15 and 20 million dollars — with a super qualified cast, although very random. 6s624l

Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane from the trilogy Spider-Man by Sam Raimi), the Brazilian Wagner Moura (Narcos), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad.), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), Nick Offerman (The Last of Us) to Stephen henderson (Dune: Part Two) make up the cast of the fictional film, but not that fantasy, which generated controversy and positive curiosity in the world of cinema.

Imagine a United States whose president, in response to not obtaining mandatory from California, Florida and Texas, decides dissolve the American Constitution and disunite the States, using the Army against the oppressive “fake Americans”, in the face of all the military power of a “first world” country. Missiles, rifles, grenades, tanks... a fractured country that demonstrates conformity and normality in the midst of its own ruin and barbarism. The plot of Civil War, under the eyes of the director and screenwriter Alex Garland (Ex Machina), it would be a very creative and out-of-the-box film if it weren't for the harsh off-screen reality.

Even though the entire atmosphere of Civil War surrounds the conflict between states, what dictates the film is another narrative. The story itself revolves around a team of photojournalists, whose mission is to travel thousands of kilometers to the American capital to interview the President, who, due to the war situation, has his days numbered.

With a country at war, the team makes a road trip — car journey — to the destination, coming across abandoned roads, paralyzed and full of ambushes, and consequently encountering innocent citizens who just want to live their lives normally to others who use the precariousness of war to dictate spaces and people as you see fit.

Kirsten Dunst is the experienced and famous photojournalist Lee, with a brilliant career that cost her bitterness and hopelessness towards humanity. Wagner Moura is the charismatic and adrenaline junkie of catastrophe coverage Joe, a reporter who has long worked with Lee covering the Civil War.

As ing team , the young Cailee Spaeny is Jesse, a 23-year-old girl who ires Lee's legacy and wants to follow in the same footsteps, photographing independently and then recruited to the team by Joe — even against the wishes of Kirsten Dunst's character; and seasoned New York Times journalist Sammy (played by Stephen henderson), who, at first, would not the team because he thought it was a “suicidal” action, but ends up being given in by Lee. In turn, Nick Offerman plays the President.

The trio Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura e Cailee Spaeny simply carries the film on her back. The actors have great chemistry together and their individual performances brought more weight, naturalness and vivacity to the film, each in their own way. While Kirsten symbolized the emotional after-effects of a war, carrying heavy looks of exhaustion, Wagner represented incredulity disguised as excitement, fear disguised as good humor, and Cailee, due to her lack of callousness about war, only has to offer her photographic and the desire to contribute something relevant.

In fact, Cailee's change in stance is very sad and interesting as more traumatic — and common — events of the War impact the team. The actress was the heart of Civil War and a very cool device was his contrasting looks.

However, there are two actors who were the real highlights: Jesse Plemons e Wagner Moura. The Brazilian detained all the comic scenes de Civil War and, not content with that, he starred in the most dramatic scene in the film, showing his versatility. Already Plemons performed the best scenic work of his career, bringing out his sadistic side and delivering the most unnerving scene in the film.

The collective exerted strength in Civil War, which wouldn't surprise me, a memory in the unprecedented category of Oscar 2025 de Best Cast.

Photography, Art Direction and Sound 4x531d

Along with the performances, other pillars of were the photography and sound mixing. A war film obviously has strong combined work between the three as a prerequisite, but Civil War brings them together to tell a story history in an unprecedented way, with more appeal to photography and art direction.

As for the sound, the work was really quite satisfactory and helped immerse the viewer in the battle fronts. However, the film itself hinted, at the beginning of the film, literally, with a mono audio insertion in each speaker in the cinema, that the mixing would have its ambition, something that was not fulfilled with originality.

Now, I can't say the same about the art direction and photography, extremely well crafted. The montage including photos taken by Lee and Jessie — and the clear creative and visual difference between each photo of the characters —, the camera angles that depart from the camera's focal point, more macro cuts of the environment itself taken by the horrors of war and the recurring contrasts between normal life and military weapons were more than welcome, but also a rich look from Alex Garland at the narrative and a new way of telling the plot with words that are not spoken – but felt.

This, in fact, would be described throughout the review, but I felt that I should write a specific section about the art direction due to information I scoured the internet: the Civil War used royal weaponry, with blanks, in the combat scenes, including one assembly of Washington DC blocks from scratch in three weeks, by the team of designers at Caty Maxey — we are talking about buildings, in the plural, of 100 meters high.

The choreography supervision, led by military advisor Ray Mendoza, a former member of the United States Navy, was the icing on this cake of commitment and excellence from the technical team, explaining the pleasurable flavor that the action scenes had.

An important space for journalism 3x2s26

Over time, journalism broke away from the stereotype of “nosy”, “mean” and “influenceable” people and gained greater prominence in its crucial role for society. Citizen Kane (1942) Zodiac (2007) Spotilight – Secrets Revealed (2015) and The Post (2017) are some incredible films that showed the arduous daily lives of journalists and reporters in their profession and the challenges and threats that are part of the tangle.

Civil War It certainly enters this list of great works on journalism, showing a facet hidden by the great roles of presenters and reporters: photojournalists. The courage, commitment and commitment of a photojournalist in transmitting information and, consequently, reporting a story through photos, showing his face and giving his body and soul completely, is irable. In a more serious perspective on authoritarianism and massacres, photojournalists risk their lives for their job and the public interest.

A uniqueness of the photojournalist in the film and exposure of the real duty of journalism by what is happening in the world outside of our spotlights and gazes, in different ways, makes Civil War be an exciting film for us, professionals in the field. Even staying between the lines, the film is a love letter to journalism, shaken by the market and society, by belittlement, boos, punches, kicks and deaths — Brazil, for example, is on the list of countries that kill the most journalists in the year, according to reports from Reuters Institute and the NGO Reporters Without Borders.

Why is your plot a “warning”? 1w4g2g

Besides Civil War being a love letter to journalism, Alex Garland's film represents the love of democracy. The meaning that the film conveys is about the how dangerous political polarization can be It is like it emerges and gains strength from the outside. With the dissolution of the Constitution, there was the dissolution of the Union and the deprivation of several human rights, such as the right to come and go, and the permission of obscurantism taking the reins of a country in a state of emergency and order.

In premieres, Wagner Moura was very necessary when considering how much the Americans do not value democracy and the parameters between Brazil and the United States with the platform for extremists and the flirtations that the two American countries have had recently — the Invasion of the Capitol in January 2021 and the Invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília, in 2023, all from the extreme right. Although “Civil War” does not serve any partisan agenda — hence the creative choice of uniting, on the same front, the states of Texas and California, conservative and progressive, respectively —, the message is well given due to the destructive power that a simple attitude or speech can achieve in the State.

With Brazil coming with municipal elections, the United States with presidential elections in October and plus another 56 countries distributed in a Legislative and Executive character, Civil War it becomes a warning about valuing the Constitution and the political order, without opening up to extreme speeches and behaviors that depreciate the Democratic State and its equipment.

Conclusion: Is Civil War good? 5f625z

Civil War It is not a “modern masterpiece” as some critics have claimed, but it is certainly a excellent film it's common great message to be echoed. For action fans, it's a full plate; For lovers of good stories, the film directed and written by Alex Garland is very interesting, although the focus is centered on the investigation of the war and, on top of that, on the central challenge of photojournalists of interviewing the president. If you're expecting more explanations of the War, the film didn't go that route, which is good and bad at the same time.

As performances are visceral, with Wagner Moura starring in all the scenes and gaining a very cool and constructive highlight. The film is aesthetically beautiful, both in of scenery and editing and effects, and its script is very cohesive and dynamic, without going into depth. Your last act is suffocating, but predictable, somehow.
