Call Me By Your Name (Call Me By Your Name, 2017) is one of the highlights of this awards season. At the Oscar, he was nominated in 4 categories: Best movie, Best Actor (Timothée Chalamet), Best Adapted Screenplay e best song (Mystery of love). 1l6o4f
Directed by Italian Luca Guadagnino, the film deals with the discovery of sexuality and its maturation. But will Call Me By Your Name Is that all they're talking about? See our opinion in the next paragraphs.
The plot 3j6r6v
The plot of the film is quite simple. Elio (Timothée Chalamet) is a young boy who is on vacation in the Italian countryside, a very bucolic place that, for him, is even boring. until it arrives Oliver (Armie Hammer), a friend of his father's who is also a college professor.
Oliver is already a grown man, well resolved in life and who brings with him a certain air of mystery. And that arouses Elio's total curiosity. From there, the film starts to show us the development of the relationship between the two, from the initial s to the most intimate ones that summer of 1983.
The script k2d4p
One of the right decisions of the screenwriter (James Ivory) was to make us follow the development of the story through Elio's eyes. Younger and much more inexperienced, the boy saw in Oliver the personification of the ideal man: handsome, intelligent, impeccable and articulate English, deep and imposing voice and, above all, mysterious.
It's quite interesting to see how Elio's curiosity soon turns to iration and then turns to desire. And, by studying his new object of desire more and more, he also discovers his own sexuality.
Another factor that caught my attention in the script is the absence of conflicts. There are no conservative and tyrannical parents here, jealous friends/girlfriends who plot plans to harm the protagonist, unnecessary drama and oppressive feelings, as is common in gay romance movies. It is as if the calm and tranquility of that peaceful place were also transported to their developing relationship.
In addition, Elio lives among cultured and culturally open people. It is normal to speak English, Italian, French and even German with the utmost naturalness, as well as having dialogues about the etymology of words and classical literature as if they were talking about the weather. This conveys the idea that the more education and culture people have, the more open they will be to alternative forms of love, which would be normal.

The main characters here are Elio and Oliver, played by Timothée Chalamet (the little boy from Interstellar, I know, you didn't recognize) and Armie Hammer. The chemistry of the two is very good and they convey naturalness. Timothée has earned his Oscar nomination, giving us very well the reactions of a young teenager discovering his sexuality. However, I highly doubt he will win, given the monstrous performance of Gary Oldman em The Fate of a Nation that we already have criticism here.
Armie Hammer also doesn't look bad and plays his role as an intellectual and mysterious man well. And, largely because of the script, the relationship between the two develops in a clumsy way, starting with some teasing, then hesitation and ending with total surrender. Both a lot of sincerity in their performances and the kissing and sex scenes are interpreted in a very natural way.
However, in one of the last scenes of the film, the actor michael stuhlbarg, who plays Elio's father, completely steals the show and presents us with a fantastic monologue where he advises his son about love, pain and letting himself feel things. In my opinion, it was the best scene of the entire movie!

And even though the script and acting weren't so good, Call Me By Your Name it's a nice movie to watch. Photography, by Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, values warm tones a lot, focusing on solar lighting that makes everything more cozy. The choice of locations was also very good. Sometimes I wanted to spend a whole month on my next vacation walking through these small Italian towns enjoying the peace and tranquility of the place.
The director used and abused the actors' semi-nude bodies. Taking advantage of the hot photography, it is common for actors to walk around the house without a shirt and with very short shorts in open shots. We can say that it is also a fan service, but it is part of the atmosphere of the place and the process of desire of both.

Call Me By Your Name it's more than just a romance movie, it's a study in discovering sexuality without questioning it. Therefore, he has the capacity to reach much more than the gay public, since his theme is universal.
It's certainly not an Oscar favorite. I find it very difficult for him to win in the Best Picture and Best Actor categories. But it has good chances in the Best Music and Best Adapted Screenplay categories, although I'm hoping that Logan win in this category.
