A new website report The Intercept states that both the US intelligence agency (CIA) as the British (MI6), for years, have been working hard to circumvent the “encryption layers” that Apple has implemented in its iPhones e Macs.
The revelations from Edward Snowden, detail for the first time how agencies worked to crack encryption keys on iPhone as well as Mac. By targeting essential security keys used to encrypt data stored on Apple devices, the researchers sought to thwart the company's attempts to provide mobile security to hundreds of millions of Apple customers around the world. Studying both "physical" and "non-invasive" techniques, the US government-sponsored initiative has been looking for ways to decrypt and ultimately circumvent the firmware encrypted from Apple.
The report details how CIA and their British counterparts typically meet at an annual conference where they discuss new strategies and methods for compromising fortified security on the iPhone. A method centered on a “modified version” of development software Apple's Xcode which was theoretically able to install backdoors (programs that make infected machines vulnerable to external attacks) on infected devices, disable security mechanisms, and ostensibly send encrypted data to an agency listening point. Another proposed strategy involved a counterfeit version of an operating system update. OS X.
While there is no indication as to the success of the CIA's efforts to Hacked the iPhone, this report, along with others make it abundantly clear that Apple's hardware remains a high-priority target for US and UK agencies. Just a few weeks ago, it was reported in the press that the same governments were able to steal the encryption keys of millions of smartphone SIM cards, including those of several iPhones.
