Artists against artificial intelligence: what do they think about AIs? 1d213r

Songs, films and even books can now be found with different Artificial Intelligences as their authors, but what do professionals in the field think about this?

AIs are in fashion, and this is not limited to just talking about ChatGPT for creating texts or Midjourney for producing images. There is an increasing push among large companies to produce more and more Artificial Intelligence, making a high number of AIs available for their s to use. 442c

In this scenario in which authorial content and content developed by artificial intelligence are confused, an ethical debate arises in several areas. After all, is it ethical for an AI to rely on one or more artists to produce a new work based on their styles? What limits should or should not be imposed on AI creations?

In the midst of this whirlwind of new productions arising from artificial intelligence, in which style inspirations are confused with plagiarism, there is nothing more fair than the artists themselves talking about the presence of AIs in the artistic world. Check out the artists' battle against artificial intelligence below:

The music Heart on my sleeve it was really a success. Not by chance, a collaboration between two of the biggest names in pop music in recent years, Drake and The Weeknd, with verses about singer and actress Selena Gomez, The Weeknd's ex-girlfriend; reached impressive numbers on Spotify, TikTok and YouTube. The big problem? Drake and The Weeknd never got together to record Heart on my sleeve, the song was created by an Artificial Intelligence, based on the singers' voices.

Universal Music Group, which owns the artists' publishing rights, alleged copyright infringement in the songwriting, resulting in the song being removed from the catalogs of Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer and Tidal. YouTube also took down the video due to a copyright claim, and TikTok removed related content. On Spotify, music Heart on My Sleeve is credited to a profile called ghostwriter, with no mention of Drake and The Weeknd.

Holder of several hits, such as Shape of You, British singer and songwriter Ed Sheeran, in an interview with American Songwriter, expressed fear about the potential that some AIs present:

What I don't understand about artificial intelligence is that for the last 60 years, Hollywood movies have been saying, 'don't do it.' And now everyone is doing it. And I'm like, 'Haven't you seen the movies where they kill us all?' Also, I just don't know why you need this - if you're taking a human being's job, I think it's probably a bad thing. The whole point of society is that we all do jobs. If everything is done by robots, everyone will be out of work.

Another harsh criticism made about the use of AIs in music came from the lead singer of the heavy metal band Slipknot, Corey Taylor, in an interview with Kerrang! Radio:

To be honest, I don't care about any of this. I don't know what people are trying to prove. Are they trying to prove that computers can do things as well as people? Because if so, then what's the point? An even worse example of technology replacing talent than I've been complaining about for years with Pro Tools, tuning and using the same sounds. And people keep saying, 'oh, isn't that cool?'. No, it's not cool. You are crazy?

But not all sides of the industry are opposed to Artificial Intelligence. It was thanks to Artificial Intelligence that the band The Beatles managed to finish the song now and then, composed and recorded in a demo by John Lennon shortly before his death in 1980. Paul McCartney, singer who became an exponent in the band, explained how AI worked in this project, which is known as “The Beatles’ final song”:

He [project director] managed to extract John's voice from this rudimentary recording. The cassette only had voice and piano, and artificial intelligence managed to separate the two. You tell the machine 'this is the voice, this is the piano, and I want you to remove the piano. John's voice was very pure after going through the artificial intelligence, so we were able to mix as we normally do. We finished this recently and it will be released at the end of the year.

AIs in the film industry 5o3k5v

From special effects to artists being resurrected, you may not know, but the use of Artificial Intelligence in films and series is not new. In large productions, such as saga films Star Wars, AIs have always been welcome to help create more elaborate scenarios and visual effects.

In a resource very similar to DeepFake, for example, the actor Paul Walker could be 'resurrected' by an artificial intelligence that captured old recordings of the actor to reproduce his appearance and movements in Fast and furious 7, released when the actor had ed away. Films with large productions have also used resources involving AI to rejuvenate actors' faces, as happens in several Marvel movies and The Irish with the characters of Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino.

However, with the boom in AIs, concerns arose in the sector relating artificial intelligence to the replacement of a series of professionals involved in film productions. With the Hollywood screenwriters' strike, which began in May of this year, the use of Artificial Intelligence also came on the agenda, as screenwriters claim to be afraid that large studios will begin to replace their work with tools similar to ChatGPT, creating texts in an automated way, and worse: based on previous creations by screenwriters, without their permission.

In addition to scriptwriters, voice actors also find themselves threatened by AIs, as many studios would have a bank of their voices and could, using artificial intelligence, replicate new lines never spoken with the same phonetics as the original voiceovers.

Known for his role as Agent Coulson in the Marvel Universe, actor Clark Gregg expressed concern in an interview with The Wrap, with directions guided by Artificial Intelligence in film productions:

There are fundamental things, like how you look – when you do something like a genre film, maybe in a superhero universe, where they scan the whole of you… And you know, at any point they're probably going to be able to replicate the whole of you. This needs to be done with your permission, consent, involvement. We are not information that serves as food for a computer. That's not what humanity is for.

Protagonist of notable films, such as Castaway e Forrest Gump, Tom Hanks also raised the legal and labor issues that may be behind the use of AIs in film productions, but did not rule out the possibility of continuing to star in films after death:

We saw that there would be this ability to take 'zeros' and 'ones' from inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. It's only grown a billion-fold since then, and we see it everywhere. I can tell you that there are discussions going on in every association, every agency and every law firm to get to the legal ramifications of my face and my voice and everyone else being our intellectual property. What is a genuine possibility now is that if I wanted to, I could get together and release a series of seven films starring all of them, which would be 32 years from now until the end of time. I could get hit by a bus tomorrow and that's it, but the performances can go on and on and on.

Well known for her participation in the series Homeland, actress Carly Turro told Reuters who fears for his career with the arrival of Artificial Intelligence as a potential replacement for actors:

If it weren't a big problem to plan the use of AI to replace actors, it would be obvious to put this in the contract and let us sleep more peacefully. The fact that they don't is terrifying when you think about the future of art and entertainment as a career.

The literary market was also unable to escape the clutches of Artificial Intelligence. Books created by generative AI systems, similar to the technology behind ChatGPT, are now available on Amazon and other online bookstores. Still on Amazon, we can also find coloring books that use AIs, such as Midjourney, to generate images without colors.

To win over buyers and gain visibility on virtual “shelves”, one strategy adopted is to use authors’ names, instead of attributing credits to AI. As is common, AI-generated works are often associated with untrustworthy content. This phenomenon points to significant challenges facing the publishing industry and consumers as AI becomes an increasingly present part of the literary market, affecting both the authenticity and quality of available works.

Author of crossroads e the corrections, the American novelist Jonathan Franzen harshly criticized the concept of intelligence attributed to AIs:

I think artificial intelligence is a misnomer. This is not intelligence, these are very smart algorithms, good at guessing. What will be the next word in a sentence? That's not intelligence. Intelligent is what an animal has, because it has goals and desires. And intelligence helps you achieve these goals […]. Despite this, I think we will quickly reach a point where artificial intelligence will produce fakes so perfect that it will actually look like I'm here saying that I don't believe in the Holocaust.

Jonathan Franken

Recently, Jonathan Franzen ed a group of renowned writers to legally sue OpenAI in United States District Court. The writers allege that the company used their books to train ChatGPT, infringing copyright. The complaint highlights that while OpenAI does not publicly reveal which works are used in training, the company has itted to using copyrighted material.

Victim of books generated by AI using her name without consent, writer Jane Fridman, author of The Business of Being a Writer (2018) e Publishing 101 (2014), had to ask Amazon to remove five books generated by Artificial Intelligence that were for sale on the website published under his name without authorization. The author harshly criticized the lack of verification with books generated by AIs:

Unless Amazon establishes some kind of policy to stop someone from just publishing whatever book they want and applying whatever name they want, this will continue, it won't end me.
