After several delays, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) ended the Census 2022: the result released today (28) shows that Brazil now has 203 million inhabitants. The total brings Brazil's population by more than 12,2 million, compared to the Census carried out in 2010 — amount close to the number indicated by the institute for the total population of São Paulo (capital), which is 11,4 million, in view of current numbers. 226e4k
Even with this increase, the pace of growth over the last 12 years slowed down, being the lowest in the entire historical series of the IBGE, which began in 1872. The most well-known urban centers in the country, however, maintained their high populations: this is the case of São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Brasília (DF). Below, you can find showmetech other highlights on the disclosed data.
What is the Census? 483x4b

In recent years, the IBGE faced problems carrying out the Census, a survey that assesses the situation of the Brazilian population. After collecting data (both face-to-face and via online questionnaire), the institute manages to show the country's economic conditions, evaluating everything from children per household, education level, ethnic-racial identification to access to various public services, such as basic sanitation and water supply. of water.
During the previous istration of the federal government, this potential of the Demographic Census stood aside: the former minister of economy Paulo Guedes defended research cuts in 2019 and later blamed senators for reductions in Census 2022. In addition to the lack of incentives to undertake research, the COVID-19 also weighed heavily on the public budget. In this way, there were cuts in the funds destined to the IBGE.
Since the first realization, in 1872, the population of Brazil has grown 150 times. Since then, the record for the entire historical series of the IBGE takes place in the period from 1970 to 1980, when the increase was 27,8 million people in total, helping the country reach the 120 million mark. In the last 12 years, we are getting closer and closer to doubling this goal (check the following chart), given that we are already more than 200 million.

Although Brazil has reached the number of hundreds of millions, the institute shows that women have had fewer children: on average, there are 1,76 children for each mother, considering the data released in 2020. For now, the country still has a high number of adults, which results in an economically active population, but, in the future, the number of older people may increase, thanks to the drop in the birth rate.
What are the most populous cities according to the 2022 Census? 6ela

Although the growth rate was lower, at 0,52% per year, most Brazilian municipalities had an increase in the number of inhabitants. Today, Brazil has 5.570 municipalities, of which 3.168 had their population increased: this represents 57% of all cities. That is, we can deduce that four out of ten municipalities had a reduction in inhabitants.
As for the regions, the IBGE indicates that the Southeast still maintains its position as the most populous region, with 84,8 million, with growth of 0,45%. Alongside the Northeast, which increased by 0,24%, the two regions were the ones with the greatest drop in the number of inhabitants (see the interactive chart). On the other hand, the North and Midwest had the highest increases in population: 0,75% and 1,23% each — the region where the Pantanal is located was the only one that recorded more than a percent increase in population.
How the home deficit reveals a housing problem 1e6472

O Census 2022 showed that throughout the 2010s, together with the years 2021 and 2022, the number of households increased by 34%, while the Brazilian population did not grow in a similar proportion, given that the increase only reached 6,5%. However, this scenario of increase exists at the same time that many people remain homeless, mainly due to the lack of housing: more than 18 million homes are unoccupied, considering data from the IBGE.
Another important detail that the research body revealed also shows that more and more Brazilians are living with fewer people in the same household, since, on average, there are 2,79 people for each house, according to the most recent data.
Before, a little higher, the number reached 3,31. This drop is accompanied by a strong difference in the number of people per km², since 4,5 inhabitants live in an area of this size in the North, while 91,8 inhabit one km² in the Southeast region. When commenting on the most recent results on Brazilian households, the Director of Geosciences at IBGE Claudio Stenner says that this drop is already a trend in the country.
The average number of residents is smaller each time. This explains the growth in households so significantly. The remainder is the greater number of vacant homes and places of occupational use.
